Jumping – or perhaps moon-walking a little slow to the Michael Jackson memorializing, the town of Blacksburg has nevertheless renamed its historic Five Chimneys house on Draper Road in honor of the 60’s pop group from Gary, Indiana, The Jackson 5.
* Historic Five Chimneys with groovy gold record letters
“It’s just a temporary thing,” said Town Chimney Sweep Historian, Nick Frazier. "Something to give a little pop to the old house, which almost no one realizes was also a recording studio for Steve Winwood in the 70’s. "
“Okay, okay, not true. I was on a roll with this music gig fib and thought I’d see how far I could take it. Sorry,” said Frazier.
Each old chimney has been handsomely adorned with gold lettering which spells out the names (A-B-C!) of each band member (Easy as 1-2-3! And 4 and 5). The only scratch in the groovy idea was the signage company mistakenly labeled one chimney, G-A-R-Y, since replaced with T-I-T-O.
“The guys read the work order wrong. I mean, honestly, I’d have thought Gary was a Jackson name, not Toto. Wouldn’t you? I mean Tito! Toto was another pop group, right? I mean...oh, *#@@**just forget it,” Frazier said, while admiring the finished work on chimney number four, Tito.
“Maybe next year we’ll name one after Smokey Robinson.”
Meanwhile, a least reliable source says an alternative idea by First And Main backers to build a new Alexander Black House on their South Main property and call it ABBA BACK IN BLACK was nixed when potential house employees balked at donning the required-by-copyright ABBA outfits.
*ABBA members (alarmingly unconcerned with what they are wearing. Especially the first A, who seems way too pleased with himself.)
(First A even more pleased years later.)
